24 Jun Honouring a McLeod Pioneer: The Legacy of Marge Rudder
On Sunday, 28 June, McLeod Country Golf Club will once again celebrate one of its most significant Honour Board events, Marge Rudder Day. Proudly sponsored by the McLeod Country Golf Club Board, the event provides an opportunity not only to enjoy a day of golf but also to reflect on the people whose vision, commitment and dedication helped establish the club that members enjoy today.
As McLeod continues to welcome new members and grow its community, it is important to remember and recognise the individuals who played a pivotal role in shaping the club’s foundations. Marge Rudder is one such person whose contribution to McLeod Country Golf Club remains an enduring part of its history.
Born Margery Bothwell Boys in Toowoomba in 1905, Marge became one of the driving forces behind the establishment and early development of the club. A Foundation Member, she was present at the very beginning of McLeod Country Golf Club and played an active role in its formation. Her commitment to the club extended far beyond membership, with Marge serving as a witness to the Memorandum of Articles at the club’s inauguration. Interestingly, historical records from the time identify her simply as “Wife to Mr C Rudder”, referring to her husband Colin, a reflection of the conventions of that era.
Marge’s leadership qualities quickly became evident, and she was elected as the club’s first Captain, serving from 1968 to 1971. During these formative years, her guidance and dedication helped establish many of the traditions and values that continue to define the club today. Her influence extended across all aspects of club life, fostering a strong sense of community and encouraging participation among members.
Her service to McLeod did not end there. Following her time as Captain, Marge continued to contribute to the club’s growth and governance, ultimately serving as Club President from the Annual General Meeting in 1976 until her passing in 1979. At a time when female leadership within sporting clubs was far less common than it is today, Marge’s achievements stand as a testament to her determination, capability, and commitment to the McLeod community.
Marge passed away on 16 June 1979, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that continues to be remembered nearly five decades later. In recognition of her outstanding service and unwavering dedication, she was awarded Honorary Life Membership of McLeod Country Golf Club.
Members may also be familiar with the Silky Oak tree located to the left of the 13th green. Beneath this tree rests a special connection to the club’s history, as it was planted over Marge’s ashes in July 1979. A commemorative plaque remains in place, serving as a lasting tribute to one of McLeod’s most influential pioneers.
As players take part in Marge Rudder Day this year, they do so in honour of a woman whose leadership, vision and passion helped create the foundations upon which McLeod Country Golf Club continues to thrive. Her story remains an important reminder of the people whose dedication built the club and whose legacy continues to inspire future generations of members.
