The Club

The McLeod Country Golf Club was named after Gertrude Evelyn McLeod (1891-1971). Gertrude dedicated her life to her passion of golf, leading to her life-long advocacy in the evolution of golf in Australia particularly for women. In 1968, a new all women’s administered golf club was established and as a tribute to Gertrude, the title McLeod Country Golf Club was chosen.

The development of the McLeod Country Golf Club was a pinnacle moment for the advancement of women in sport in Australia. The founding committee faced numerous hurdles prior to the opening of the club. After several years of consultation amongst the golfing community, Brisbane City Council and often doubtful male only golf clubs, the team of dedicated ladies behind McLeod Country Golf Club successfully commissioned Architect Colin Trapp to design the minimalist clubhouse.

Funding for the new clubhouse was initially scarce as doubts over its legitimacy were cast throughout the community. Hilda Reed, a member of the founding committee, approached then QLD Premier Sir George Francis Reuben Nicklin to seek funding. Sir Nicklin took to the idea of the new club and proceeded to advocate to Suncorp to assist with the funds to build the clubhouse. A short time later, Suncorp agreed to loan roughly $45,000 to the committee for the initial funds for the construction of the clubhouse.

In September 1968, a handing over ceremony was held on the soon to be McLeod Country Golf Club land. It was at this ceremony, Century Estates, the original owners of the land handed over the deeds to the land for the sum of just $1, this $1 bill can still be found proudly mounted within the clubhouse.

As you go around the course you will encounter the famous silo. The silo on McLeod Golf Course, visible from Tekapo Street, marks the site of one of the original dairy farms in the area.

At McLeod Country Golf Club, we are proud to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible contributions of our dedicated volunteers — the heart and soul of our vibrant community. These passionate individuals generously give their time, energy, and expertise to help create the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes McLeod so special.

From lending a hand at events to assisting with day-to-day operations, supporting course maintenance, or simply going out of their way to help others, our volunteers bring enthusiasm, commitment, and a genuine love for the club into everything they do. Their efforts often happen behind the scenes, but the impact is felt everywhere — in the smooth running of our activities, the beautiful condition of our facilities, and the strong sense of camaraderie that defines our club culture.

We see you, we appreciate you, and we thank you. It’s because of your selfless contributions that McLeod continues to thrive as more than just a golf club — it’s a community, a second home, and a place where lasting memories are made.

To all our volunteers: your time, effort, and passion do not go unnoticed. We’re incredibly grateful for everything you do to help McLeod shine.

Our volunteer programs include:

Garden Ladies

Every Tuesday morning, an energetic group of devoted club ladies maintain the club’s gardens. All volunteers regardless of experience are welcome to join the Garden Ladies. Simply pick up a set of gloves and enjoy the morning together.

McLeod Sons

Every Monday and Friday, our McLeod Sons get together to do all those odd maintenance jobs around the course. In the process the team of eager men learn new skills and enjoy socialising in a team environment.

The Library

Did you know that McLeod Country Golf Club has its very own private library, exclusively for our golfing members? It’s more than just a room with books — it’s a peaceful hideaway, nestled right within the club and overlooking the rolling greens of the course. Imagine finishing your round and wandering into a quiet, sunlit space where time slows down and the only decision you need to make is which book to pick up next.

Whether you’re into page-turning thrillers, timeless classics, or simply want a quiet corner to flick through a magazine, the library has something for every kind of reader. Book exchange – take a book, leave a book, or just discover something new! With large windows offering serene views of the fairways and the gentle hum of nature outside, it’s the perfect setting to relax, recharge, and escape the hustle of everyday life.

There’s even tea and coffee-making facilities, so you can brew your favourite cup, sink into a comfy chair, and enjoy a well-earned break. It’s also a great place to meet up with fellow members, share book recommendations, or simply enjoy a quiet chat with a beautiful backdrop.

And don’t forget about the book exchange! Take a book, leave a book, or discover something new — it’s the perfect way to keep your reading list fresh while connecting with other members.

At McLeod, we believe in creating spaces that feel like home — and our library is just one more way we make that happen. Come see it for yourself, and discover your new favourite spot at the club.
