A McLeod Memory: First Club Championship

A McLeod Memory: First Club Championship

Every club has moments that shape its identity, and at McLeod Country Golf Club, our rich history is built on the dedication, passion and achievements of the members who came before us. As we continue to grow and welcome new members into our golfing community, it is important to pause from time to time to reflect on the people and events that laid the foundation for the club we know and enjoy today.

Throughout the year we regularly celebrate club events, competitions and the individuals who have contributed to the success of McLeod Country Golf Club. We also acknowledge the pioneers whose vision, determination and commitment helped establish our club and create opportunities for generations of golfers to follow. Sharing these moments from our history not only helps newer members understand our origins but also honours the enduring legacy of every McLeod member who has played a part in our journey.

One such milestone occurred on 4 July 1970 when McLeod Country Golf Club staged its inaugural Club Championship. It was a significant day in the club’s history, attracting a field of 30 competitors who contested the prestigious title and established a tradition that continues more than five decades later.

At the conclusion of the championship, Miss Judy Anderson etched her name into the history books by becoming McLeod Country Golf Club’s very first Club Champion. Her victory marked the beginning of an honour roll that has grown to include many outstanding golfers over the years. Finishing as runner-up was Miss Hilda Reid, one of the club’s founding figures whose contribution to the establishment of McLeod Country Golf Club remains an important part of our story. Her involvement in the inaugural championship was a fitting reflection of her commitment to the club and its future.

Running alongside the championship was the B Grade competition, reinforcing the club’s commitment to providing meaningful competition for golfers of all abilities. Mrs Elwyn Holohan claimed the B Grade title, while Miss Edna Hastie finished as runner-up. Their achievements are an important part of the club’s early history and demonstrate the strong competitive spirit that has always been present at McLeod.

Today, more than 56 years later, the Club Championship remains one of the most prestigious events on the McLeod calendar. While the course, facilities and membership have evolved significantly since 1970, the values of friendship, sportsmanship, competition and community remain as strong as ever. Every player who competes in the Club Championship becomes part of a tradition that stretches back to those pioneering members who helped establish the event and build the club’s proud reputation.

As we look ahead to this year’s championship, we also take the opportunity to recognise every Club Champion, runner-up and competitor who has contributed to the history of this great event over the decades. Their achievements have helped shape the proud traditions that continue to inspire today’s members.

Congratulations to all the winners throughout the years, and we wish every competitor the very best of luck in Saturday’s 2026 Club Championship. We look forward to seeing another chapter added to the proud history of McLeod Country Golf Club.
